GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR DETECTOR
If you wish to get the optimum performance from your metal detector, and avoid the disappointment of unfulfilled expectations, it is important to understand the following:
The claims made by manufacturers for any given detector may not match the day to day experience of the operator. This is not to say that the manufacturer is making statements that cannot be substantiated; it is more that a specific claim might be repeatable only under certain conditions that you are unlikely to encounter in the field.
If you are using a machine with an LCD screen it is sensible to approach the results you see on it with a healthy dose of scepticism. For example, if the word “gold” (or a symbol signifying gold) is displayed, there is every chance that the target prompting the signal is a different metal altogether. This is because it is extremely difficult to “read” the magnetic fields generated by objects below the ground; detector technology has come a long way in the last forty years but it still falls a long way short of consistent reliability. The same is true of “Discrimination” – whilst machines will vary in their ability to ignore metal (principally ferrous material), there is a point at which this cannot be done, ie when the iron reaches a certain size the detector will give a signal.
So, given the above, how do you maximise the potential of the machine? The answer is to use all of the information that is generated (visual and auditory) even if it is wrong. The LCD screen says one thing, you dig up another – this is potentially useful; remember what the signal sounded like, whether or not it changed with angle of approach or height, what the ground conditions were etc. In time you will build up a mental databank of retrieved items and the signal characteristics associated with them. Experienced operators who have developed this kind of “relationship” with their detector can appear to be uncannily accurate with their assessment of a signal, and it is an ability that every detectorist should aspire to. A note of warning: reaching this level of competence is not something that can be achieved overnight – like most skills it is realised through a combination of perseverance and time.
